The main event for March will be a casual buffet dinner at Trader Vic’s in Hotel New Otani (www.newotani.co.jp/en/tokyo/restaurant/vics/), where we have booked the Boathouse Bar for our exclusive use. Join us for an evening of plentiful international cuisine in a tropical atmosphere. One Trader Vic’s original cocktail on arrival (normal free flow of beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks thereafter), and a special selection of three desserts from Hotel New Otani’s patisserie Satsuki included.

We are pleased to announce that the new British Ambassador to Japan, HE Paul Madden CMG (Gonville & Caius Cambridge 1977), has kindly accepted the Presidency of C&O. To welcome Paul and his wife, Sarah, to Japan, we are holding a seated 5-course dinner at The Tokyo Club on February 16th: reception and aperitifs from 18:30, dinner from 19:00, after-dinner drinks.

We have the sad duty of reporting the death of a valued member and dear friend, Professor Ryozo Tanaka, Professor Emeritus of Keio University. He passed away on 29th July 2010, a month short of his 76th birthday, after a brief hospital stay.

Memories of C&O Kansai

Terry Nakamura, my “Senpai” at Worcester College in Oxford, retired from the post of Honorary Secretary of the C&O this April after drinking thousands of bottles of wines at various C&O parties and golf matches over a period of more than 30 years. As the first secretary of C&O Kansai, I would like to share my memories and the history of the reinauguration of C&O Kansai, which was one of Terry’s greatest contributions to C&O.

Firstly, let me offer my thanks to the Honorary Secretaries for arranging this special “Gokurosama” event in my honour at the Mitsubishi Club. The event was originally scheduled in June at Kojunsha in Ginza, and I apologise for forcing its cancellation due to my sudden visit to Oxford. I feel I must therefore give you a brief report of that unexpected trip.

Being asked to write about the Society's activities in the old days was rather embarrassing to me as I would have to reveal my real age. I have been disguising myself as someone ten years younger, although the deception was probably obvious on golf courses. Nevertheless I decided to accept the request, thinking, "Who cares about my age?!" In any case, I have recently had to buy that wicked old man's driver and spoon called an S-Yard to maintain the distance of my woods shots.
