C&O Spring Golf Tournament — March 2012
Hodogaya Country Club once again hosted the Cambridge & Oxford Society for our Spring tournament. This splendid venue — just a short thirty-minute drive down the Tomei — continues to be our favoured “home” ground.
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of our stalwart golf organisers Steven Thomas (recently elected a member at Hodogaya — congratulations, Steven!) and Terry Nakamura, Tokyo’s uncooperative spring weather failed to deliver. This may explain the relatively small turnout on what proved to be a cool and damp March day.

The ten hardy souls who did attend nevertheless enjoyed an excellent day of golf. In such an august setting, any grim thoughts prompted by three-putts on Hodogaya’s famously slick greens are quickly dispelled by the beauty of the plum blossom, the professionalism of the caddies, and the warmth of the camaraderie.
Although Oxford have historically held a substantial lead in the “University Match” rankings, this year belonged to Cambridge. The Light Blues claimed all of the top four positions, achieving victory by an impressive margin of 44 strokes.
Simon Dalby won the individual competition with a polished round of 72 gross. Peter Itoh finished second, and Alastair Macdonald placed third.
