C&O Autumn Golf Outing — October 2012

The 2012 C&O Autumn Golf Outing was held on 20th October under beautiful, sunny autumn skies — a welcome relief after the unusually hot summer experienced that year.

The tournament took place at Fuji OGM Ichihara Golf Club. Fortunately, traffic on the Aqua Line was light that morning, allowing all participants to arrive without the usual frustrations of a long weekend drive.

A total of eight people joined the event — four representing Oxford and four representing Cambridge. While the Oxford players put up a strong effort, Cambridge claimed victory in the University Match by a narrow margin of just 4 strokes (331–327). The historic record now stands at Oxford 23 vs. Cambridge 18.

In the individual competition, Yoshihiko Kawamura won the C&O Trophy for the first time with an impressive score of 97 gross and 77 net.

The new Champion modestly commented that, despite benefiting from a high handicap, he had not expected to win, having struggled with his driver and fairway woods in recent months. However, he credited his success to an excellent caddy — who managed to find his ball even in the bushes — and to helpful guidance on the greens. He also enjoyed the camaraderie and encouragement of his playing partners: Charles Postles, Steven Thomas and Jim Weeks.

On such a perfect Kanto autumn day, all participants thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and strengthened the friendship that lies at the heart of the Society. We look forward to the next C&O Spring Golf Outing at Hodogaya Country Club, scheduled for 23rd March 2013.
