Takao-san Climb — May 2007

The Society has organised an annual climb up Takao-san for five consecutive years. Although the mountain is close to central Tokyo, it offers the feeling of true countryside. While the 2006 climb was hampered by rain for much of the day, this year’s weather was excellent, making for a very pleasant outing.

We began our ascent at around 12:30 p.m., taking a very leisurely route past the waterfall and along the riverbank, weaving around tree roots and greeting descending hikers along the way. The scenery and fresh air made for an enjoyable climb.

We reached the summit slightly later than usual and enjoyed soba and beer for lunch. We were joined there by Ed Whittaker, who had travelled separately. For the descent, the group split in two: some took the chairlift (the cable car was not operating), while others chose the road route. Although we initially worried about reaching Takao-Sanguchi Station in time for the bus, this proved easier than expected.

From there, we travelled in two groups to Ukai Toriyama, where we were shown to a beautiful room overlooking a pond and waterwheel. A delicious meal—featuring aubergine, grilled chicken, and several seasonal delicacies—was thoroughly enjoyed, accompanied by generous amounts of the restaurant’s famed “bamboo sake.”

After dinner, we strolled through the stunning garden, taking in the serene atmosphere and impressive scenery. Ukai Toriyama truly is a spectacular venue.

Everyone returned safely to Tokyo after a wonderful and memorable day out.
