C&O Spring Golf Meeting — March 2010

On Saturday, 27th March, eighteen golfers gathered at the venerable Hodogaya Country Club for the C&O Spring Golf Meeting. We were greeted by cool temperatures and a steady breeze, but Hodogaya was in splendid condition as always.

Alongside many of our regular stalwart members, it was a pleasure to see some new faces joining the C&O golf group, including Tony Jackson and Charles Postles. We also welcomed three guest players.

By lunchtime, reports from the morning round confirmed that the course was playing tough — no player had managed to match their handicap. The afternoon proved no easier, and after battling through 18 demanding holes, the traditional ofuro at the end of play provided welcome relief to tired muscles and weary golfers.

When the results were tallied, experience and local knowledge shone through. Peter Itoh, a Hodogaya member, won the C&O Trophy for the first time with a score of 78, prevailing over Steven Thomas on countback. Charles Postles finished third, and previous champion Yasuzo Takeno placed fourth.

In the Varsity Match, Oxford extended their historical lead to 21–15 with a decisive 11-stroke victory.

A short gathering and prize-giving ceremony rounded off a very enjoyable day, and participants were already marking their calendars for the Autumn Meeting — scheduled for Saturday, 23rd October. Further details were to be announced in due course.
